Two forms of life, incompatible with each other, collide.
What will survive their cataclysmic meeting?
A science-fiction short story, originally published in IGMS Issue 66. Cover illustration by Rhiannon Rasmussen.
Praise for "CompanionShip":
"What makes this story special is that the leviathan and its leukocytes are genuinely alien in nature as well as name; I applaud Rasmussen’s imagination and skill in creating a story I found different and mind-expanding yet plausible at the same time." —Caroline Humes, SFF Direct

That was a beautiful moment!
Also, I too wonder what exactly were those black and white things that came from the shipwreck and why did they cultivate them on the first place? (As I assume they did so for long enough to use it for the 'bread')
Thank you! The "black and white" areas were the growth patterns (live and dead areas) of yeast and bacteria as it spread through the alien ship. Our constant microbial traveling companions!
Ohhh, that makes sense!
